Rules for owners and riders

Draft rules prepared for adoption by the village. Nothing here is in force until the regulation is passed.

What may be licensed

A bike above this ceiling is a motorbike, and motorbikes are not permitted on the island at all.

  • Continuous motor rating of 250 W or less.
  • Assisted top speed of 25 km/h or less.
  • Working pedals, or an equivalent human-powered fallback on a cargo bike.
  • Two brakes that work independently of each other.
  • A battery with a legible manufacturer label and an undamaged casing.
  • No aftermarket controller, no removed speed limiter, no modified wiring.

Riding

  • Riders must be at least 16. A passenger may be younger, from age 12.
  • Pedestrians have right of way everywhere, and absolutely in the village centre and on beach paths.
  • Front and rear lights must be lit between dusk and dawn.
  • One passenger only, and only where the bike is built to carry one.
  • No riding in marked pedestrian-only zones or during marked walking hours.
  • A rental operator must issue a rider pass, with a safety briefing, before a visitor rides away.

Batteries and charging

The island has timber and thatch construction, narrow lanes and no fire appliance. These rules exist for that reason.

  • Charge only at a registered address or at an approved charging point.
  • Never charge inside a room where someone is sleeping.
  • Use the charger matched to the battery. Mismatched chargers are the common cause of fires.
  • A fleet of 5 bikes or more needs a designated charging area away from sleeping accommodation, and a suitable extinguisher.
  • A swollen, punctured or water-damaged battery fails inspection on the spot and the bike is suspended until it is replaced.
  • Dead batteries go to the island collection point. The deposit is refunded when they do.

The annual inspection

Checked once a year. A conditional pass gives 14 days to put it right, with a free recheck. Items marked critical fail the whole inspection.
